Workshop Description: Pewter Embossing combines the antique art metal techniques known as chasing and repoussé-the modelling or embossing of thin, malleable sheets of metal with handheld tools to create a 3-dimensional decorative design. Modern metal manufacturers have created pliable types of metal sheet or foil perfectly suited for the modern crafter to engrave, raise or emboss with basic tools giving their artwork volume and texture.
One of the great things about metal embossing is that you can keep it as simple or detailed as you want, making it an attainable medium to learn.
With a few simple tools, a small tray as workspace and the rich luster of pewter sheet you can easily create beautiful art.
No prior art experience is needed—just a willingness to play, explore, and create! Inspired by the fabulous paper collage artworks of Anne Bagby we will create our medieval-look metal collage artwork with modern metal embossing techniques, on luscious lead-free pewter sheet. In this retreat you will learn how to transfer design using the three key metal-emboss
tooling techniques: engraving, low relief embossing and high relief. You will also learn how to use various objects to add interesting, raised textures. We will use a chemical patina to create an antiqued finish with various grades of intensity and color hues. Our color palette will be satin antiqued silver and distressed classic gold. For the background of our art panel, you will learn a variety of faux etching techniques on metal, that will also translate well onto other art mediums.
Thursday afternoon marks the beginning of our creative journey! You will work on a small project designed to familiarize you with the tools and materials at your disposal during the workshop. At the end of the day, you'll have the opportunity to select from three different designs; Attitude, Gratitude, and Harmony, designs specifically created to showcase your new learned skills. Accompanying these designs are comprehensive instruction sheets that will help guide you through the art of metal embossing. For those
eager to explore further, extra kits will be available for purchase.
All key supplies are provided, and you will have the use of all the metal embossing tools needed for the duration of the course. Please see the list of supplies you need to bring.
